Carrie Megan ~ Pushing Boundaries

Carrie Megan is ‘Pushing Boundaries’ in the best possible way from June 26th – July 8th 2026 at the Jessie Edwards Gallery.

And just like that, our summer season exhibitions begin at the Jessie Edwards Gallery on Block Island. We are very excited by this year’s lineup of artists we’ve got coming into our show space. We are kicking it off with Carrie Megan, a gallery favorite, with her new exhibition of ten works ‘Pushing Boundaries’ which will be adorning our walls from June 26 – July 8.

Those familiar with Carrie’s work will think of her big skies and captivating color, the serene landscapes seemingly pulled from an imaginative space which calls us to linger just a little bit longer. We enter into the calm when we stand before her work. For those unfamiliar with her paintings, these new oil on canvas works will grab you and usher you into a place you’ve only dreamed about.

This year we are treated to three paintings in Megan’s Pentimento Series. Pentimento is Italian for “change of mind” and we can sense the underlying images of these works which the artist is reimagining. ’Pentimento II’ (30 x 30”) uses a vibrant and complementary palette to excite the viewer. While we can only imagine what kind of day it was before, now with such an explosion of color across the landscape, and with the structure drawing our eye and calling us to come explore, forgetting what may have been there in the past.

‘Dark Skies’ (36 x 36”) gives us a different type of day. For anyone who has spent periods of time on Block Island, this view will feel familiar. Many an afternoon in summer the storm clouds can roll past on the horizon, never touching us with rain but providing us with a wonderful view to look out on.

The use of structure is often minimal in Megan’s work which makes it all the more alluring when they form part of the landscape. ‘Lighthouse Emerging’ (30 x 30”) is etherial in nature and reminds us that because of the fog that can roll across the landscape and sea at any time here, the importance of lighthouses is vital to our maritime existence.

In ‘Depth’ (24 x 24”) we feel the landscape draw us forward. Anything seems possible entering into this day we have before us. Nothing is standing in our way and we are asked to gently see where it all may lead. We are warmed by the colors and soft landscape and feel held in the depths.

These ten new works are on view at the gallery beginning June 26. Please come discover them for yourselves upstairs in the iconic Post Office Building in Old Harbor. We are open Wednesday – Monday (closed Tuesdays) from 10-5pm or when the OPEN flags are out and always by appointment. We look forward to welcoming you back into the space to see this enticing exhibition as well as the other beautiful art on our walls.
